12:34 pm - Gah.
Almost a year? I am the worst.

Update: Dragon*Con!
We will be there, with bells on and with friends in tow! We've got a room at the Hilton, nearly finished costumes, and did I mention the bells? We've got them on. :) I am really, really looking forward to seeing everyone, so please please please when you get there, send me a text or call me, and let me know where your room is, and that you've arrived safely, so I can go looking for you. I intend to hit a lot of Battlestar and Firefly programming, and of course some of the costume stuff.

I'm so excited!

Guess what! An online quiz knows that I'm egocentric! Wheee! I guess I wear my cocky on my sleeve. That said, it does kinda feel as though it were written right now about the weekend I'm just beginning to experience. Then again, it also says I limit my involvement and can't form attachments, and pretty much, I'm going to call moving state with a guy an attachment. I'm so old fashioned.

5:20 pm - A moment worth sharing.
So I'm leaving the Publix with a few last minute groceries for the weekend (Keg Weekend. Everyone wish me luck- big relationship stress-test dead ahead!), and a familiar scenario encroaches on my mental preparations for dinner and weekend. A beat up car, music blaring slows down as it passes me, and a teenage boy leans out the window, grinning. Just as I start to work up a scowl, he looks straight at me and says, politely, 'You're SO pretty!' Then he waves, sits down again, and they speed off. No proposition, no ugly language, no degrading objectification. Just a genuine, no-strings-attached, expectation-free compliment, given in a friendly manner. All I could offer was a surprised 'Thanks!', and a bemused smile at the back of the car as they drove off.

No moral, just a moment. And a smile that just won't go away.

9:28 pm - Addendum to previous entry...
Have a room now, which I believe has a twin sized sleeper in it, so if I know any solos who need a room, feel free to let me know :)

ALSO- I know I'm not the only one with a pet. What on earth has anyone else done to get pet care on god-awful everyone-in-the-world-is-out-of-town-so-nobody-can-watch-my-dog-and-anywhere-I-would-consider-boarding-her-is-booked-solid labor-day weekend?
In the event that anyone who reads this is NOT going out of town for Labor Day, know that I will pay kennel prices (about double normal pet-sitter cost) for anyone that will watch her, and extra to anyone who would be willing to spoon her. She likes to spoon.

8:08 am - On the off-chance...
That someone needs roommates for dragon*con, I just happen to have a couple of really picky ones. We'll probably just get our own room, but I didn't want to find out after we'd done that that a friend had somebody bail on them and could have used roomies. SO-

If you have a room, in any hotel, including any of the overflow hotels, that needs two more people AND has a bed for them to sleep in, let me know!

7:19 pm - I am alive.
And many thanks to Andy, Helen, and Farshad for checking. Thanks to you guys, when I do go, they'll likely find my body before the dog has eaten the whole thing. :)

I don't know what's come over me, that I've stopped checking or writing email, or updating the journal, but I'll try to make sure that stops here.

That said, there aren't a lot of updates regarding my life. I got a job, a tedious little job, in a gray little cubicle, at a great big company that will keep me forever if I let them.
I'll try not to let them.

For anyone in Atlanta, or for that matter anyone at all who wants to make the trip, let it be known that damn near every weekend since we moved in here, we've been hosting people for weekends of poolside debauchery. This apartment complex is well suited to it- we've got two pools, so people take their kids to the big one, and leave us to our drunken devices at the small one, for the most part. There is also a park where we can play in a small river with the dog, a beautiful downtown area, and a lot of good restaurants. Josh will be more than happy to tell you about the BBQ. It's not a terribly long drive, and there's almost always someone already coming, so carpools are infinitely possible. Andy, I feel compelled to also mention specifically to you that there is anticipated a 'keg weekend', probably in the near future. The battle of wills regarding what the keg will contain has begun already, and it will either be an excellent weekend, or the weekend that gets us kicked out of the apartment complex. Hard to say which. In any case, anyone who wants to spend a weekend by the pool with a pina colada/jack and coke/jack and jack/keg/whatever your fevered imaginings drive you to, is welcome to come up some weekend and hang out. We'll be out of town this weekend and the weekend of dragon con (I'll get back to that in a sec), but other than that I think everything is open. I'm about tired of only ever seeing Josh's friends :)

Dragon*con. I AM going. Hotel arrangements haven't been made yet, so I can't really give a lot of information, and as of right now my sewing machine has not been unpacked, so I can't promise a lot of new and exciting costumes, but I WILL be there. So that's that.

Also, I have finger puppets, and they bring me joy. Please, because you are my friends, bring me joy that the burden may be lifted from poor little finger-sized Mahatma Gandhi.

1:09 pm - What a strange mood...
I present to you the bounty of a very silly lunch break, inspired by e.e. cummings' 'i carry your heart'.

I have heard one may carry a heart not ones own
(joyous burden! no heart ought to travel alone)
Yet this baggage reveals a quirk unseen, unknown
My heart, filled with another
appears to have grown

I confess it was always a roomy affair
(though I’ve tended it sometimes without enough care)
Yet it’s visibly swollen beyond all repair
containing another
there’s more of it there

And furthermore, since it resides in my chest
(Not taken by force, nor held by duress!)
if his distance is greater. his attachment far less
It must be there’s no longer
one beneath his breast

When he leaves me to seek out a newer someone
(I can see in him now the desire to run)
Will the heart stay with me, love’s trophy hard won?
In exchange, perhaps,
for the cd collection?

I think I just channeled Shel Silverstein for a moment. It was a strange moment.

12:44 pm - BAHAHAHAHA!
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 12 Speaking of apologies, today brought a good one from Seattle's klassy kousin to the east,
Bellevue, where Bellevue Community College President Jean Floten apologized for the racially offensive math question
that appeared on one of her school's practice exams. According to the Seattle Times, the question in question read,
"Condoleezza holds a watermelon just over the edge of the roof of the 300-foot Federal Building, and tosses it up with
a velocity of 20 feet per second." Students were then instructed to formulate how long it would take Condoleezza's
watermelon to hit the ground. According to President Floten, the question originally featured the name of the comedian
Gallagher, whose signature shtick was to smash watermelons; when the question was later rewritten, the name was
changed to Condoleezza. At an open-campus meeting today, President Floten expressed her mortification at "this
act of institutional racism" and promised to redouble school efforts to improve racial and cultural sensitivity on
campus. Props to President Floten, who faced up to this stinky pile o' shit with aplomb, and who shouldn't feel too
bad—we get Gallagher and Condoleezza Rice mixed up all the time.

This settles it. If you aren't reading The Stranger, you should be. I especially recommend reading the archives of the
'Party Crasher' feature. I have never seen such an awesome source of house-party theme inspiration. C'mon a Cosby
sweater party? Who the fuck wouldn't want to come to that?!

1:46 pm - So here's my reasoning....
Last year, Patrick put a message here to let me know he'd be at DragonCon and give me his number so we could find each other there. Now I have big fat news for Patrick, and that number is no longer good, and I have no way to get in touch with him. But since when he wanted to find me, this is where he posted, I figure it's just possible that maybe he reads this journal, or checks it occasionally, or maybe someone who has his information does. So, in conclusion, PATRICK FUCKING KNOWLES! WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU? CALL ME!!

That will be all.

4:06 pm - First thing's first....
THANK YOU!!! To Erin, Martha, Kelly, and Elizabeth for dressing me up, making me up, and dragging me out dancing Saturday night. I had the BEST time, and if you hadn't done it, I probably would never have found out where Compound hides the good dance floor. (You hear this, Ryan? There's a GOOD one, and we missed it! but we won't make that mistake again...) You guys are the best. Sometimes I guess you need your friends to tell you it's time to get away from the computer.

Also, thanks to Alex, Rafael, and Fernando, and whoever else, wherever they are, for not grabbing my ass or trying to go home with me. Thank you to the world at large for finally producing club patrons who are there to dance, and don't mind if that's what I'm there to do too. Awesome.

and finally- DOES ANYONE KNOW ANY GIRL SCOUTS?!?!?! I need cookies, and I can't find them! I know time is running out! I bought some, but the dog ate them, so please, if you know where I can find any booth sales or cookie-hoarding scouts, please share!

That is all.

9:39 am - In case anyone is feeling charitable...
I just got an email that my little cousin is shaving his head to support children's cancer research, which I think is really cool. The email says he's been growing his hair out all year for this event, but check out the picture. I'm pretty sure he's been growing it out his whole LIFE. In any case, I know we don't all have a bunch of extra money laying around, but I'm really proud of him for being that socially conscious at his age, and also brave enough to shave all that hair off- he's never been a short-haired kid, this is a big change for him. So mostly, this is just props to my awesome cousin, but also, if anyone DOES have a couple of dollars they could throw his way to help him meet his fundraising goal, my gratitude comes in the form of Pie.

10:29 am - Pretend Birthday!
Okay, the rest of the details for anyone who doesn't have them- Piedmont park, josh has been telling people around 3-4, but I'm thinking probably a little earlier than that. Feel free to call me and see where we're at. Probably the big field by the Park Tavern, but possibly another big field if that one is occupied. Parks are flexible. If you can't find us, call me. No presents necessary. It's not that kind of birthday, and I'm moving all of my stuff again, so no need for more stuff. If you want to birthday gift me, gift me with moving assistance :) Since its the park, pets are cool. Don't wear nice clothes. It's not a nightclub. Be prepared to play frisbee, and if you're good at it, be prepared to be on my team :) When it gets cold, or people get tired, we'll probaly head to the park tavern for a couple of drinks, and if anyone wants to talk sexy Civ4 talk to me, maybe back to the house after that. If you need more details than this, call me. 678-643-8966

MWAH!

I'm becoming addicted the 'best-of-craigslist'.

To me, this is pretty much the funniest thing ever written. Surely this guy has read Cosmic Banditos.

12:35 pm - Yay!
My phone is back!

From the seed of a terrible morning springs good news!
I got a flat tire this morning on the way to [a bad day at] work
and in the process of digging out the tire-changing equipment
located my long-lost cell phone. I am finally in touch with the world again!
I also let a very kind older gentleman who reminded me vaguely of my father
help me change it when the lugnuts proved tighter than I expected.
I must be getting soft.
There was definitely a time when I would have been sharp with him for suggesting I couldn't do it myself.

My job is rapidly becoming less fun. I still like it, don't get me wrong, and for the first time since I've been here I actually got a call that mentioned research, so that's good.

Unfortunately, the scheduling has become...erratic. I'm getting emails 2 or three times a week instructing me to reschedule all or half of a day, or multiple days. I'm rescheduling rescheduled reschedules. People are becoming upset.

Scratch that.

Upset people are becoming MORE upset. They did, after all, kind of start out that way.

I don't like to be the bearer of this much bad news, and frankly it's starting to get me down.

Blah.

2:44 pm - Feedback needed!
So my birthday kinda crept up this year, as I've noted before, and I'm trying to work out what on earth to do. I can't really throw a party properly, as my apartment is too small and my roommate too stodgy. Clubbing has been a letdown lately, I don't have the pool anymore, and sixflags has a new coaster coming in April, so I don't want to go in March. A disturbing part of me really kind of wants to have a LAN party and play Civilization 4. Would there be any interest in this, provided there were still tasty cocktails? I know a lot of my friends are gamers. I know some aren't. The problem is, I don't know exactly where the line is. I also know this isn't exactly 'risque', and definitely falls outside of casey tradition. I had been turning over in my mind the possibility of a lingerie party, but I just don't have the space. We can have a lingerie lan....

In any case, if anyone wants to do this, say so, so I'll have an idea whether it's any good. If not, PLEASE feel free to post alternative suggestions. Just remember, I'm not looking for party themes, I need things people can go out and do, or things that by nature come with their own space so that it is not necessary to use my grumpy-roommate-filled 800 foot apartment.
