The government teacher in me wants to remind you that Supreme Court Justices are appointed by the president, who is also known as dickwad, and confirmed by the Senate, who are populated by scary rightist freaks. So no, your vote, if we could have one, wouldn't count. /end scary geekiness

Some people aren't standing for it. Ms.Cecilia Fire Thunder of the Oglala Souix in S.Dakota is planning on running an abortion clinic on indian land, where the locals can't touch them. Also this:

http://www.mollysavestheday.blogspot.com/2006/02/for-women-of-south-dakota-abortion.html

which is a do-it-yourself guide to setting up an abortion clinic a la the Jane organization from the Dark Times before Roe v. Wade.

Interesting links, thanks. I think we should have a betting pool, myself. How far back in line with Georgia be to do this? Can I put my dollar on 4th?

Now that you mention it, we'd have to fuss and argue so much over what counts as a ban that there's no point. I wasn't counting the ones that already happened but got struck down way back when our supreme court was nearly balanced, and I wasn't counting bans that only include partial-birth abortion, but allow first-second trimester abortions, regardless of incest/rape/danger to the mother. But there's no way that can be everyone's standard of what counts, so I guess no pool. :)

If there's another one that's actually passed, I'm not aware of it. I think of states are moving in on the opportunity to get this sort of thing passed now, but I don't think anyone was quite so on-the-ball as S. Dakota. I could be wrong. Anyone know? And for that matter, does anyone know who else is trying?

You're right. Louisiana. Don't they have OTHER things to be doing?

Also, Michigan is working on it, and it is already banned in all US military medical facilities except in cases of incest, rape, or danger to the mother's life.

Wow. That's excellent, almost as good as the Christmas thing. I might have to appropriate part of it for a monologue, too.

But I do have something to add: DAMNIT! I knew there'd turn out to be something wrong with New Zealand and even worse with Ireland. FUCK, FUCK, FUCK. I guess that leaves Iceland, and the fact that NZ is small enough that political change is possible.
